AFCON 2026: Man Utd's Mbeumo, Amad, and Mazraoui's Performances and Return Dates (2026)

Manchester United's Ruben Amorim faces a mixed bag of news as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) unfolds, impacting the availability of key players Bryan Mbeumo and Amad.

It's a tough time for Manchester United, with several players, including Bryan Mbeumo, Amad, and Noussair Mazraoui, currently representing their countries at the AFCON. This absence, coupled with injuries to stars like Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt, and Mason Mount, has significantly depleted the team during a crucial period of the season. Manager Ruben Amorim is forced to adapt his strategies.

Initially, things looked promising. A reshuffled United side managed a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Newcastle. However, any optimism was quickly dampened by a disappointing 1-1 draw against Wolves, the Premier League's bottom-ranked team. This result might send Amorim back to the drawing board to rethink his approach.

The team's attack against Wolves lacked inspiration, relying on a deflected goal from Joshua Zirkzee to find the net. Amorim must be wishing he had Mbeumo and Amad available to bolster the attack.

But here's where it gets controversial... The fact that Morocco, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast advanced from the group stages at AFCON means Mazraoui, Mbeumo, and Amad will be playing in the knockout rounds. This means they won't be available for United's upcoming match against Leeds.

Cameroon secured a comeback victory against Mozambique, while Ivory Coast also fought back to defeat Gabon. Morocco had already secured their spot in the knockout stages. These results mean that Cameroon will face South Africa, Ivory Coast will play Burkina Faso, and Morocco will compete against Tanzania.

Mid-season tournaments like AFCON are a double-edged sword for club managers. They want their players to do well but also need them back as soon as possible, and most importantly, injury-free.

Amorim can take some comfort in the fact that Mbeumo was substituted at half-time in Cameroon's win against Mozambique, a decision made to manage his playing time. Amad started on the bench for Ivory Coast and came on as a substitute in the 76th minute.

Morocco and Cameroon will play their last 16 games on Sunday, the same day United plays Leeds. Ivory Coast's next match is on Tuesday. This means that if their national teams lose, Mazraoui and Mbeumo could potentially return to United in time for their match against Burnley on Wednesday, January 7. However, Amad's return would be delayed until the FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton on Sunday, January 11, at the earliest, if Ivory Coast is defeated by Burkina Faso.

Amorim will have to continue relying on United's academy players, who have been getting valuable first-team minutes. Jack Fletcher and Bendito Mantato came off the bench against Wolves, and Tyler Fredricson also saw playing time in the win against Newcastle.
