Prepare to be transported! Imagine a place where ancient equestrian traditions meet modern design, a sanctuary of learning and artistry in the heart of Abu Dhabi. This is the vision brought to life by the French-Lebanese design duo, David/Nicolas, in their stunning interiors for the Abu Dhabi Royal Equestrian Arts (ADREA) riding school. This isn't just any riding school; it's a world-class institution, the first of its kind outside of Europe, spanning a massive 65,000 square meters on Jubail Island.
David/Nicolas were entrusted with designing two key spaces: a library and a saddle workshop. But what makes this project truly unique? The answer lies in the fusion of two worlds. ADREA's curriculum masterfully blends the European haute école tradition with the ancient Arabic discipline of furusiyya. Furusiyya, dating back to the Middle Ages, emphasizes horsemanship, chivalry, and the profound bond between horse and rider.
This rich heritage is the very soul of David/Nicolas's design. They've masterfully woven together heritage elements with a contemporary architectural style. The duo was inspired by the technical and aesthetic dimensions of furusiyya. The armor, horse equipment, and intricate construction details revealed a powerful geometric language where function and beauty are inseparable.
The library, a haven for knowledge, centers around a reading room. Here, custom shelving, a deep-red carpet, and ambient lighting create an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. But here's where it gets controversial... the shelves are adorned with decorative marquetry, crafted from oak and mahogany. These striking geometric patterns echo motifs found in Middle Eastern and Emirati architecture. The designers even brought in skilled craftsmen they'd previously collaborated with, ensuring every detail was perfect.
The reading room is surrounded by curved steel bookshelves, encouraging movement and interaction. The saddle workshop, another room within a room, is dedicated to teaching artisanal saddle-making. Storage is designed to be exhibited, showcasing saddles, tools, and leather elements. A modular system allows for flexible display reorganization, while carved details mirror the library's decorative surfaces. The workshop's flooring combines red vinyl with a practical sisal carpet. Illuminated ceiling panels provide even lighting for intricate craftsmanship.
David/Nicolas aimed to create a contemporary interpretation of Emirati equestrian heritage. The duo, Raffoul and Moussallem, who met in 2006 while studying architecture, founded their studio in 2011. Their previous work includes a limited-edition furniture collection inspired by the night sky.
