A bold move has been made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as he agrees to join US President Donald Trump's controversial Board of Peace. This board, initially thought to be a peace-building initiative for the Israel-Hamas war, has sparked controversy and raised questions.
The board's charter, leaked to the media, reveals a different purpose. It aims to promote stability and peace, but notably, it doesn't mention the Palestinian territory of Gaza, which was the focus of the war. Instead, it appears to be a potential replacement for the United Nations, a move that has left many nations hesitant.
While some countries like the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have agreed to join, others, including Norway, France, and Sweden, have declined, citing concerns. The UK, Canada, Russia, and Turkey are yet to officially respond, leaving the number of invited countries unclear.
But here's where it gets controversial: the board's structure and leadership. Member states can secure a permanent place with a $1 billion contribution, and Trump himself will be the chairman, serving as both the US representative and chairman, with the power to create and dissolve subsidiary entities.
And this is the part most people miss: the Executive Board, which will help deliver the board's mission. It includes notable figures like US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, and former British PM Tony Blair.
The Gaza Executive Board, a separate entity, has also been announced, with members including representatives from Turkey and Qatar, which has caused a stir in Israel. Netanyahu's office has stated that this board's composition was not coordinated with Israel and goes against its policy.
The peace plan's second phase faces challenges, with Hamas refusing to disarm without an independent Palestinian state and Israel not fully committed to withdrawing from Gaza. The ceasefire remains fragile, with over 460 Palestinian deaths and three Israeli soldiers killed since its implementation.
The war, triggered by the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, has resulted in thousands of casualties. Netanyahu's decision to join Trump's Board of Peace has divided opinions. What do you think? Is this a step towards peace or a controversial power play? Share your thoughts in the comments!
