Reza Pahlavi, who currently resides in the United States and leads opposition efforts from abroad, has openly advocated for targeted military actions—specifically, 'surgical' strikes against Iran’s Revolutionary Guard units. He argues that such measures could accelerate the opposition’s objectives and reduce civilian casualties by avoiding prolonged conflict.
Since late December, Iran has witnessed mass demonstrations sparked initially by economic hardships—rising living costs and a plunging currency value—that quickly morphed into widespread protests calling for the end of the regime led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Human rights organizations estimate that over 2,000 protesters have been killed in these clashes. Many of these protests have been met with brutal security responses, with authorities deploying violent force, severely restricting internet and communications to hinder organization.
Pahlavi has risen prominently within Iran’s fractured opposition landscape, often urging the people to escalate their actions. During a recent news conference held in Washington, he pledged to return to Iran someday and outlined his vision for a new constitutional framework—one rooted in Iran’s territorial integrity, the separation of religion from politics, respect for individual freedoms, and the people's right to choose their own form of government.
He also claimed that some elements within Iran’s security forces have refused to carry out the crackdown, suggesting dissent within the regime itself. Furthermore, Pahlavi accused Iranian authorities of bringing in militias from outside the country to suppress the protests, highlighting the foreign influence allegedly involved in Iran’s internal conflicts.
When asked about the future leadership of Iran, Pahlavi emphasized that it should ultimately be decided by the Iranian people themselves. His support aligns with a vision of a democratic Iran, free from religious domination, where citizens have a democratic voice in shaping their future.
The protests initially started with protests by shopkeepers in Tehran, protesting economic decline and inflation. These protests rapidly spread nationwide, targeting Iran’s ruling clergy, especially Khamenei. Protesters have shouted slogans like 'Death to the dictator' and 'Khamenei will be toppled this year,' signifying a deep-seated desire for change.
According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), the toll of these protests has been devastating: at least 2,453 lives lost—including 14 children and 156 individuals associated with security forces or government institutions—and countless injuries and arrests. The agency reports that approximately 18,470 protesters have been detained in the crackdown, raising serious concerns about human rights violations.
