The common cookiecutter shark, scientifically known as Isistius brasiliensis, is a small shark, typically measuring up to 20 inches. Its most distinctive feature, and the source of its name, is its teeth. The upper jaw boasts 30 to 37 small, erect teeth, while the lower jaw has 25 to 31 larger, jagged, triangular teeth. The researchers analyzed reports of cookiecutter damage from fisheries between 2011 and 2023, building on their previous study that linked cookiecutter activity to moonless nights. They combined this data with environmental factors like sea temperature, surface height, and salinity, creating a statistical model for cookiecutter behavior.
According to their model, cookiecutter attacks are most likely to occur at night, especially during the new moon phase when lunar illumination is at its lowest. The increased frequency of attacks during these times could be due to the sharks' increased activity at night and the longer duration of fishery operations. Interestingly, the sharks prefer swordfish at night and bigeye tuna during the day.
